Here is a quick list of some of our favorite spots in the area that are so beautiful, pictures don’t do it justice.

Highway 78 To Red Lodge

We’ve talked about it before, and we won’t stop talking about it until you’ve taken the drive. The Beartooth Front Scenic Drive from Columbus to Red Lodge is easily one of the greatest drives you’ll ever make, at least in terms of great views!

This beautiful drive is about 50 miles one way, and you’ll enjoy the gentle cruise through valleys and foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. Traffic is never heavy, though it is a popular drive and you’ll enjoy the pull-out areas along the way to stop and take pictures.

Tippet Rise Art Center

When it comes to great views and fun reasons to get to Stillwater County, the Tippet Rise Art Center is definitely on our list. Not only do you get local art and culture, you get a getaway that the whole family will enjoy.

Take a hike or bike the trail and see all of the stunning large-scale sculpture against a gorgeous backdrop of the beartooth Mountains. During the summer they hold both indoor and outdoor musical performances that you’ll be talking about for years to come!

Mystic Lake

The hike to Mystic Lake might be one of the most beautiful hikes you’ll ever go on. Even though your prize is the lake at the end of the trail, you’ll love the views of the mountain and the scenery you pass as you walk through.

This hike a definitely intermediate, and is about 6 miles round trip. It’s a great place to camp during the summer as well.

Granite Peak

Granite Peak is the highest point in the state of Montana, and is also considered one of the most difficult climbing points. It is a stunning view, however, even if you aren’t an adventurous climber. Plus there are several smaller peaks nearby that are easier for novice climbers, and hiking trails to help you get the best views.

There are two different trailheads you can go to get to Granite Peak, the West Rosebud and East Rosebud trailheads. The West Rosebud is the most popular trailhead, as it is slightly shorter and isn’t as high in elevation. The East Rosebud trail, however, might have some of the best views in Stillwater County MT, as the trail gives way to lakes, streams, and waterfalls.

Rimrock Lake

Another great view you can get to in a day is Rimrock Lake. The lake is gorgeous, with a waterfall at the inlet and a bridge at the outlet.

A lot of people camping at Elk Lake take a day trip to Rimrock Lake and back. These trails are dog friendly, so feel free to grab the kids and the pups for a fun day full of memories!
